How Large Can You Print 8K Stock Pictures at 300 DPI?
The stock pictures on Cheap Stock Pictures download as JPGs at up to 8K, which means 7680 pixels on the long side and 4320 on the short side. Pixels are the only number that matters for print quality. DPI is not stored in the picture in any way that changes the pixels; it is an instruction that tells a printer how many of those pixels to place in each inch of paper. Once you understand that, print sizing is division.
The formula
Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by DPI. Multiply by 2.54 for centimetres.
At 300 dpi, the standard for magazines, brochures, and anything read at arm's length:
- 7680 px ÷ 300 = 25.6 inches, which is about 65 cm wide.
- 4320 px ÷ 300 = 14.4 inches, which is about 36.6 cm tall.
So a full 8K file prints at roughly 65 by 37 cm at full magazine quality. That covers A2 (59.4 by 42 cm) on the long edge with margin to spare, and it covers every common brochure, flyer, poster-in-a-frame, and book cover format without upscaling.
What happens at lower DPI
Viewing distance changes the DPI you need. Nobody reads a poster with their nose against it.
- At 200 dpi, suitable for posters viewed from a metre or so: 7680 ÷ 200 = 38.4 inches, about 97 cm wide.
- At 150 dpi, common for large-format inkjet prints and roll-up banners: 7680 ÷ 150 = 51.2 inches, about 130 cm wide.
- At 100 dpi, fine for trade-show backdrops viewed from several metres: 76.8 inches, about 195 cm wide.
Print shops for billboards routinely work at 30 dpi or lower because the viewer is across a street. An 8K JPG is more than enough for those jobs.
Where the numbers stop working
Cropping reduces the pixels you have left, and the formula uses what remains. If you crop an 8K picture to a square for a 30 by 30 cm print, you keep 4320 by 4320 pixels, which is 14.4 inches at 300 dpi, still comfortably above 30 cm. If you crop to a small detail in one corner, you might be left with 1500 pixels across, and that detail will only print around 12.7 cm wide at full quality. Check the pixel count after cropping, not before.
The other limit is the JPG itself. JPEG compression discards fine detail that you cannot recover, and the effect shows up first in smooth gradients and sharp edges at very large sizes. The files here are saved at high quality, so this is rarely visible, but if a client is sending a picture to a high-end art printer, mention that the source is a JPG. Reading the size before you download
Every image page states the pixel dimensions next to the Download JPG button and in the spec block below the preview. Not every picture is a full 8K; some subjects are delivered at a smaller size, and the page tells you which. If you need a particular size, search by subject first through the tag index or a query such as mountain, then read the dimensions on the page before saving.
Quick reference
- Business card or postcard: any picture on this site.
- A4 flyer at 300 dpi: needs 2480 by 3508 pixels. Any 8K picture, even cropped by half.
- A2 poster at 300 dpi: needs about 7016 by 4961 pixels. A full 8K picture uncropped, oriented to match.
- Roll-up banner 85 by 200 cm at 150 dpi: needs about 5020 by 11810 pixels. The height exceeds 8K, so the picture will be interpolated or cropped to a band. Plan for that.
Stock pictures at 8K remove most of the guesswork. When a print job does exceed the file, your printer can upscale, and the result from a clean 8K source is far better than from a 2K one.
