JPEG, PNG or RAW: Which Format Do Stock Pictures Come In?

Every download on Cheap Stock Pictures is a JPEG. The button says Download JPG, the file ends in .jpg, and there is no alternate format menu. People sometimes ask for PNG or RAW instead, usually because they have read that JPEG is "lossy" and assume the others are better. The three formats solve different problems, and for delivering finished stock pictures at 8K, JPEG is the right choice. Here is why.

JPEG: the delivery format

JPEG compresses a picture by discarding detail the eye does not notice, mostly in fine colour variation. The amount discarded is set by a quality level. At high quality, the difference between the JPEG and the uncompressed original is invisible in normal use, and the file is roughly a tenth the size. An 8K picture stored without compression is around 95 MB. The same picture as a high-quality JPEG is typically 8 to 15 MB. That is the difference between a file you can download in seconds and one that stalls on hotel wifi.

JPEG is also the most compatible format in existence. Every browser, phone, layout tool, print workflow, and content management system opens it without a plugin. For stock pictures whose whole purpose is to be dropped into someone else's project, compatibility matters more than a theoretical edge in fidelity.

PNG: the transparency format

PNG is lossless, so nothing is discarded, and it supports an alpha channel for transparency. Those two features are why logos, icons, screenshots, and cut-out objects are stored as PNG. For a full-frame photographic picture, PNG has a cost with no matching benefit. An 8K PNG of a landscape is often 40 to 70 MB, several times the JPEG, and it looks the same on screen and on paper. The pictures here are full-frame scenes without transparent areas, so PNG would only make every download slower.

If you need a transparent version of an element from a picture, open the JPG in an editor, cut out what you need, and save that layer as PNG. The JPG is a perfectly good starting point for that work.

RAW: the capture format

RAW is what a camera sensor writes before any processing. It holds more tonal range than a finished picture and lets a photographer change exposure and white balance after the fact. It is not a delivery format. RAW files are camera-specific, need special software to open, and are not something a stock site hands to end users. The pictures on this site are AI-assisted imagery, so there was never a camera sensor and there is no RAW file to give you. What you get is the finished picture, rendered at full resolution and saved once at high JPEG quality.

Does JPEG limit print quality?

Not at the sizes that matter. The print size article works through the numbers, and the short version is that a 7680-pixel JPEG prints at 65 cm wide at 300 dpi with no visible compression. Compression artefacts become noticeable when a JPEG is saved at low quality or re-saved many times. Avoid the second problem by keeping the original download untouched and exporting copies from your editor for each job.

Practical handling tips

  • Keep the downloaded JPG as your master. Do not open, edit, and overwrite it.
  • When you export a derivative, export from the master, not from a previous export.
  • For web use, resize down to what the page needs. Serving an 8K file to a phone wastes bandwidth.
  • For print, hand the printer the full-size JPG or a lossless export from it, whichever they ask for.
